After Valentine’s Day love is all around. Or is it?
Whilst some couples lovingly exchanged roses and champagne, others received more brutal offerings. A black eye, a split lip is daily reality for the one in four women and one in six men affected by domestic violence. Two women die each week and 30 men a year as a result of domestic violence, police receive one domestic violence call a minute and 750,000 children witness a parent being abused each year. Effective help and protection is available and the Courts and Police work together to ensure that the Law has teeth. Injunction Orders stop a person acting in a particular way. A Non Molestation Order prevents one person harassing, interfering with or assaulting another whilst an Occupation Order can keep someone out of and away from the family home. Powers of Arrest can reinforce these Orders and breach can lead to imprisonment. So following Valentines Day remember, the Law will support you so have the confidence to speak out and take action.
